Rachel Carson Day May 27

Rachel Carson 1962

Rachel Carson started the environmental movement with her book, Silent Spring, published in 1962. She was a marine biologist, ecologist, environmentalist, writer and activist. Rachel was born on May 27, 1907 and died on April 14, 1964. She died of breast cancer. We can honor the spirit of Rachel and be fueled by her passion for the environment by celebrating Rachel Carson Day. Every year, on May 27, do what you can in your own corner of the world to preserve the safety and sanctity of the environment. Remove the toxins from your home. Reduce your use of plastic. Find out who is polluting in your area and put pressure on them to stop.

Join other women and lobby against PVC, radiation, pesticides, dioxin and chlorine. Stage a march for the environment. Create awareness for the environmental links to breast cancer every year on May 27. Be passionate, be active, be vocal, do it together. Do it for yourself, do it for your children and future generations, do it for wildlife, do it for the earth, air and water, do it for Rachel - just do it. On May 27, 1999 we held the first Rachel Carson Day in Toronto. About fifty of us gathered in front of Queen’s Park with our signs: " No More Dioxin", "My Breastmilk is Contaminated with PCB’s and Dioxin", "No More Dumping in the Great Lakes", "PVC Plastic is Killing Us" etc.

Kids are People Too!

We listened to speeches from a politician and from an environmentalist who spoke about Rachel Carson’s life, work and legacy.Led by a bagpiper playing a funeral march, we held a "mock funeral for a toxic Ontario", and carried a coffin for several blocks, making the point that Ontario’s environment is dying and we are all responsible for bringing it back. Organize your own Rachel Carson Day in your home town on May 27th to protect the environment and the health of all species and future generations.
